Linkin Park formed in Agoura Hills, California in 1996, built around vocalist and rapper Mike Shinoda, guitarist Brad Delson, bassist Dave Farrell, DJ Joe Hahn, and drummer Rob Bourdon. Chester Bennington joined as lead vocalist in 1999, completing the lineup that recorded Hybrid Theory. Their debut album sold more than 30 million copies worldwide and remains one of the best-selling albums of the 21st century.
Linkin Park's fusion of nu-metal, hip-hop, alternative rock, and electronic elements gave them a sound that crossed genre boundaries and reached audiences that most metal bands could not. Chester Bennington's ability to shift between melodic singing and raw screaming became one of the defining vocal techniques in early 2000s rock.
Bennington passed away in July 2017. The band announced their return in 2024 with new vocalist Emily Armstrong and released the album From Zero in November 2024 — accompanied by a world tour. Linkin Park's Spotify monthly listener count has more than doubled since 2022, driven by younger audiences discovering the catalog, making them one of the most actively growing legacy rock bands in streaming.
