About Queen

Queen formed in London in 1970, built around guitarist Brian May, drummer Roger Taylor, and vocalist Freddie Mercury, with bassist John Deacon joining in 1971. Their combination of hard rock power, classical influence, operatic vocal arrangements, and theatrical showmanship produced some of the most ambitious and beloved music in rock history.

Freddie Mercury is widely considered one of the greatest live performers in rock history. His vocal range, stage presence, and ability to command arenas made Queen's live shows legendary — none more so than their set at Live Aid in 1985, widely regarded as the greatest live performance in rock. Mercury passed away from AIDS-related illness in November 1991. The 2018 Bohemian Rhapsody biopic introduced Queen to a new global generation and produced a significant resurgence in merchandise demand that continues today.

Brian May and Roger Taylor continue to perform as Queen with vocalist Adam Lambert. Their catalog's streaming numbers have grown significantly since the Bohemian Rhapsody film, and Queen now has one of the most active and globally diverse fanbases of any classic rock act.

The Queen Crest

The Queen crest was designed by Freddie Mercury himself in 1973 before the band's debut album was released. As a trained art student, Mercury created an elaborate heraldic design incorporating the zodiac signs of all four members: two lions (Leo) for John Deacon and Roger Taylor, a crab (Cancer) for Brian May, and two fairies (Virgo) for Mercury himself. A phoenix rises above the large central Q, and the whole design is surrounded by flourishes that evoke classical heraldry.

It is one of the most elaborate and carefully considered band logos in rock history — the fact that it was designed by the band's own vocalist rather than a hired designer gives it a personal quality that fans respond to. The crest appears across all officially licensed Queen merchandise and is the band's primary visual mark.
