At the Village Gate followed the enormous success of Nina Simone�s first �live� LP, which she had recorded at Town Hall, in New York, on September 12, 1959. The 1960 LP Nina Simone at Newport (recorded on June 30, 1960) and the LP presented here, At the Village Gate (recorded on unknown dates in April 1961) were attempts to repeat the success of that live album. Although neither of them would be received with the same excitement as the first, both present strong performances by Nina.
